Investment Flows Underpin Beijing Startup Growth With 63 Unicorns
The city's digital economy reached 2.4 trillion yuan last year while R&D spending exceeded 6.5 percent of GDP.
How we reported this

Beijing ranks fifth globally for innovation and first in China for startups, home to 63 unicorn companies. The ranking comes from verified ecosystem data that tracks company formation and capital attraction across major cities.
Zhongguancun Remains Core Hub
Zhongguancun Science Park continues to anchor activity as the district known for housing Baidu, ByteDance, Xiaomi and JD.com. These established operators sit alongside thousands of smaller firms that draw successive rounds of funding. The park's concentration of headquarters and research facilities keeps capital deployment local rather than dispersed across other regions.
The city's digital economy produced 2.4 trillion yuan, equal to 46 percent of Beijing GDP, according to figures released for the prior year. That share reflects sustained inflows into software, data services and hardware manufacturing that support the startup count. Beijing also leads China in research and development outlays, which topped 6.5 percent of local GDP in 2022, and it has placed third worldwide in the Global Innovation Hubs Index for four straight years.
AI Output Signals Continued Capital Interest
More than 2,500 AI companies operate in the city and generated 450 billion yuan in core industry revenue during 2025. The output figure tracks directly to investor interest in machine learning platforms and data infrastructure that originate from Zhongguancun addresses. Companies in this segment have secured multiple financing rounds that build on the same infrastructure used by the larger listed firms in the park.
Observers tracking deal flow expect the same combination of R&D intensity and unicorn density to keep attracting follow-on capital into the existing clusters. Firms already located in Zhongguancun can expand product lines without relocating, which shortens the time between funding announcements and operational scaling.
