Meanwhile, in nearby Chaoyang District, Beijing’s new Chaoyang Digital Innovation Hub has launched a pilot program that integrates high-speed 5G internet with edge computing resources for over 300 startups focused on AI, fintech, and biotech. These startups receive subsidized broadband packages averaging 2,000 yuan per month, a steep discount from the usual commercial rates that run upwards of 4,500 yuan monthly for enterprise-grade lines in the area.
Data Validates Rapid Growth
According to a recent report from the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Economy and Information Technology, the average broadband download speed in Beijing has climbed from 120 Mbps at the start of 2025 to 280 Mbps by June 2026, a leap that rivals global tech centers like Seoul. The number of startup registrations in broadband-reliant sectors increased by 18% in the first half of 2026 alone.
Moreover, the rollout of 5G coverage now reaches 98% of Beijing’s urban districts, up from 85% in mid-2025. This comprehensive coverage is complemented by Beijing’s digital inclusion efforts, such as the “High-Speed Access for All” initiative, providing subsidized internet to 15,000 microenterprises operating in less connected parts of the city’s outer districts like Fengtai and Tongzhou.
These upgrades coincide with cheaper cloud computing credits offered through partnerships involving the Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area (BDA) and major cloud providers, lowering operational costs for startups and encouraging experimentation with data-intensive applications.
