The new text names 120 as the sole special call number and requires unified command and dispatch for all such services. The same rules separate genuine emergencies from non-urgent patient transfers, directing the latter to a different line.

Residents who need help moving stable patients now call 999 instead. The division keeps 120 lines clear for critical cases while still offering a city-run option for routine transfers.

Performance figures and resident impact

Officials reported that call reception stayed above 97 percent and satisfaction above 98 percent after the switch. Average response time sits near 15 minutes. These measures come from the Beijing Municipal Health Commission announcement dated January 14, 2022.

Other large cities often maintain several emergency numbers that can slow coordination. Beijing's single-center model reduces that hand-off time by keeping every ambulance dispatch under one roof. The capital's system therefore handles volume without the fragmentation seen elsewhere.
